Organized by the Fondazione Musei Civici Veneziani and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the exhibition “Vittore Carpaccio. Paintings and drawings” is on display from March 18 to June 18, 2023 at Palazzo Ducale – Doge’s apartment.
Famous above all for his cycles of narrative and religious paintings, Vittore Carpaccio (1460/66 – 1525/26) represents the greatness and splendor of Venice by transporting sacred stories into everyday life, in scenarios rich in detail, combining the observation of the urban scene with the poetic and the fantastic.
The subject of a reborn interest in historiography, also thanks to recent discoveries, attributions and restorations, Carpaccio has not been the subject of a monographic exhibition since 1963, from the historic exhibition in the Doge’s Palace.
Curated by Peter Humfrey with Andrea Bellieni and Gretchen Hirschauer, the exhibition will trace, both thematically and chronologically, the development of Carpaccio painting from an updated perspective, through religious cycles and genre paintings and a substantial nucleus of drawings, revealing his fervent imagination, the rigor of his technique and his interest in nature, perspective and the effects of light.
