Tintoretto and Giovanni Grimani

Until 8 September 2024, the Palazzo Grimani Museum, in collaboration with Venetian Heritage and Colnaghi, presents the dossier exhibition “Tintoretto and Giovanni Grimani: Portraits Compared”, dedicated to the portraiture of Giovanni Grimani, the patriarch of Aquileia. This exhibition is part of an ongoing effort to enhance and promote the history and collections of Palazzo Grimani, initiated in 2019 with the reorganization of the Grimani Tribuna and the Doge’s Hall. This initiative is made possible through the collaboration between the Veneto Regional Museums Directorate and Venetian Heritage.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is the Portrait of Giovanni Grimani attributed to Domenico Tintoretto. This significant piece is part of the museum’s collection, thanks to the acquisition and donation by Venetian Heritage. The portrait is compared with two other paintings by Jacopo Tintoretto, Domenico’s father, illustrating the iconographic evolution of the Venetian prelate over several decades from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.

A remarkable highlight of the exhibition is a recently rediscovered small oil on panel depicting the Portrait of the Patriarch Giovanni Grimani. This piece, unearthed from a private collection by the Colnaghi Gallery, is displayed to the public for the first time. Jacopo Tintoretto likely created this panel as a model for two of his masterpieces: the Portrait of the Patriarch Giovanni Grimani from the Schorr Collection, featured in the exhibition, and the renowned Portrait of Giovanni Grimani housed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Curated by Toto Bergamo Rossi, Daniele Ferrara, and Valeria Finocchi, and supported by the Veneto Regional Museums Directorate, Venetian Heritage, and Colnaghi, this exhibition exemplifies a successful collaboration between public and private entities. Together, they contribute to the appreciation and enjoyment of cultural heritage.
