The Way of Writing

The captivating world of calligraphy can be seen during the exhibition “La Via della Scrittura” (The Way of Writing) at the Gallery of the Napoleonic Wing of the Correr Museum, open to the public until October 15, 2024. Curated by Monica Viero and Monica Dengo, this exhibition traces seven hundred years of calligraphic art, bridging the gap between East and West.

As part of the MUVE initiatives to promote the knowledge and practice of calligraphy, this exhibition offers a rich exploration of calligraphic cultures encountered by Marco Polo on his journey to China. Visitors will encounter the works of six contemporary artists from China, Iran, Iraq, Armenia, and Italy, alongside ancient documents and manuscripts preserved by the Correr Museum Library in Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, and Burmese.

The exhibition showcases the diverse artistic, historical, and cultural aspects of calligraphy. While ancient documents uphold the classical relationship where form serves content, contemporary artists delve into the communicative power of writing forms themselves, sometimes even disregarding semantic content entirely.

Each artist, including Gayane Yerkanyan, Golnaz Fathi, Hassan Massoudy, Sarko Meené, Mingjun Luo, and Monica Dengo, offers a unique perspective on calligraphy and handwriting from their respective cultures. Through their works, they explore the symbolic meanings, spatial shapes, and cultural identities embedded within calligraphy, inviting visitors to embark on a journey of discovery and cultural appreciation.
