Curated by Stefano Nicolao, the Palazzo Mocenigo Museum presents “Marco Polo. The costumes of Enrico Sabbatini” until 30 September 2024. This exhibition commemorates the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death by celebrating his remarkable journey along the “Silk Road”. At just seventeen, Marco Polo embarked on an adventure with his father and uncle, sailing across seas, traversing vast deserts, and visiting legendary cities. Along the way, they encountered powerful figures and perilous warriors from diverse cultures, experiences vividly brought to life by the acclaimed RAI production, which saw international collaboration, including participation from China.
The exhibition pays tribute to director Giuliano Montaldo, costume designer Enrico Sabbatini, and composer Ennio Morricone, honoring these exceptional Italian talents. Stefano Nicolao, who directly collaborated with Sabbatini, showcases his expertise in creating authentic scenes and costumes for the transition from Persia to China. The exhibition features around thirty costumes that document Marco Polo’s epic journey from Venice to China.
Accompanying these costumes are original sketches and still photos, the result of four years of meticulous study and preparation for the film. This initiative not only highlights the historical significance of Marco Polo’s travels but also showcases the artistic achievements of those who brought his story to life on screen. Visitors will have the unique opportunity to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship and historical research that went into recreating the diverse cultures and settings encountered by the legendary Venetian explorer.
