From February 7 to 28, 2025, La Fenice Opera House invites you to experience the timeless brilliance of Giuseppe Verdi‘s Rigoletto. A cornerstone of mid-nineteenth-century opera, Rigoletto remains one of Verdi’s most celebrated and provocative masterpieces.
Initially met with resistance from censors for its bold themes, the opera plunges into a world of power, corruption, and sacrifice. The story unfolds in the glittering yet sinister court of the Duke of Mantua, an unscrupulous libertine whose actions lead to tragic consequences. At its heart is Rigoletto, the court jester whose protective love for his daughter Gilda ultimately results in heartbreak.
Commissioned by La Fenice in 1850, Rigoletto marked a significant evolution in Verdi’s compositional style, introducing more complex dramatic structures and moving beyond traditional aria-cabaletta forms. Written in just forty days, its premiere was a resounding success, securing its place as a perennial favorite in the operatic canon.
