The Redentore Feast (Feast of the Redeemer) is one of the most anticipated events in Venice, celebrated every year on the third Saturday of July. This year, the feast falls on July 15 and 16, 2023. The origins of the feast date back to the 16th century when Venice was hit by a terrible plague that killed thousands of people. After the plague had ended, the city held a grand celebration to thank God for their deliverance.
The highlight of the feast is undoubtedly the spectacular fireworks display that illuminates the night sky over the Venetian lagoon. Thousands of people gather in boats or along the banks to watch the fireworks. It is a magical moment that creates an unforgettable atmosphere.
In addition to the fireworks, the feast is also known for its customs. The evening begins with a religious procession led by the Patriarch of Venice, who boards a ceremonial boat and sails towards the Church of the Redentore at Giudecca Island. Along the way, thousands of boats, decorated with colorful lights, accompany the Patriarch. This creates a unique scene where the waterways of Venice are filled with boats of all shapes and sizes.
After the religious procession, Venetians and tourists gather to enjoy a traditional meal of fish and local delicacies, along with a glass of Prosecco. The Redentore Feast is a true celebration of the city’s traditions and history, and it is an experience not to be missed if you are visiting Venice in July.
