Re Chicchinella at Goldoni theater

From December 6 to 8, 2024, the Teatro Goldoni presents “Re Chicchinella”, a new theatrical production by the acclaimed director Emma Dante. This work marks the conclusion of her trilogy inspired by the fairy tales of Giambattista Basile. Based on a story from Basile’s “Lo cunto de li cunti”, Dante’s “Re Chicchinella” offers a dark and fantastical exploration of greed, loneliness, and transformation.

The story centers on a sick and desolate king, isolated from the world and surrounded by a cold, uncaring family whose only concern is obtaining a daily golden egg. During a hunting trip, the king encounters a magical hen, with which he gradually merges. The hen feeds on his insides, symbolizing a slow transformation, until the king and the creature become one.

Dante’s adaptation captures the fairy tale’s eerie and grotesque essence, while also infusing it with her signature style—blending powerful visual storytelling with intense emotional depth. “Re Chicchinella” explores themes of decay and metamorphosis, reflecting on the destructive effects of power, selfishness, and detachment.

This production is a collaboration between multiple prestigious theaters, including Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa, Atto Unico – Compagnia Sud Costa Occidentale, and Teatro di Napoli – Teatro Nazionale. As the final piece in Emma Dante’s trilogy, “Re Chicchinella” promises to be a captivating and thought-provoking exploration of one of Basile’s lesser-known but profoundly symbolic tales.
