The chamber music concert “Quintets with Two Cellos“, part of the “Cycle Cello: The Soul of Romanticism”, will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the historic Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista in Venice. This special event will feature the renowned Quatuor Cambini from Paris, with Julien Chauvin and Karine Crocquenoy on violins, Pierre-Éric Nimylowycz on viola, and Atsushi Sakai on cello, joined by acclaimed cellist Marion Martineau.
The evening’s program celebrates the romantic era with a unique selection of French compositions for quintet with two cellos. The repertoire includes Charles-Nicolas Baudiot’s Quintette avec deux cellos n°1, op. 34, Auguste Franchomme’s Romance pour violoncelle et quatuor à cordes, op. 10, and Théodore Gouvy’s Quintette avec deux violoncelles n°1 in E minor.
The quintet with two cellos reflects the intimate, salon-style performances of the 19th century, where social gatherings fostered the creation and exchange of artistic tastes. This format, popularized in French musical circles, reveals a fascination with the expressive power of the cello and its ability to evoke romantic sentiments. While Schubert’s well-known cello quintet often overshadows this genre, France’s rich repertoire of cello quintets is a treasure waiting to be rediscovered. The concert promises an immersive experience of virtuosity and romanticism, offering a rare glimpse into this lesser-known yet captivating musical tradition.
