During the Biennale Arte 2022 in Venice, the In Between Art Film Foundation presents its first exhibition “Penumbra” with 8 new video productions. Curated by Alessandro Rabottini and Leonardo Bigazzi – respectively Artistic Director and Curator of the Foundation – Penumbra presents video productions by Karimah Ashadu (1985, UK), Jonathas de Andrade (1982, Brazil), Aziz Hazara (1992, Afghanistan), He Xiangyu (1985, China), Masbedo (Nicolò Massazza, 1973 and Iacopo Bedogni, 1970, Italy), James Richards (1983, United Kingdom), Emilija Škarnulytė (1987, Lithuania) and Ana Vaz (1986, Brazil). Commissioned and produced by the institution founded and chaired by Beatrice Bulgari, the eight works address, each in a different way, the urgent themes of contemporaneity.
Inspired by the rarefied atmosphere of Venice and the hybrid architecture of the Ospedaletto and the Church of Santa Maria dei Derelitti, “Penumbra” is conceived as a scenic device in which architecture and its history, sound, images and temporary spatial interventions are in reciprocal dialogue. Starting from the physical interpretation of the concept of “semi-obscurity“, the exhibition extends its meaning to the many areas of shadow, uncertainty and transformation that surround our present.
