“Out of focus” invites viewers to delve into the captivating world of Patrick Mimran’s photographic exploration, on display at the Stanze della Fotografia on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore until August 11, 2024. This exhibition unveils 30 previously unseen photographs, offering a glimpse into the artist’s innovative vision over the past decade.
Patrick Mimran, a Parisian native born in 1956, is celebrated for his multidisciplinary approach to art. Since the 1980s, he has masterfully blended various mediums, from photography to technology, music, and multimedia, to create thought-provoking works.
In “Out of focus,” Mimran challenges conventional notions of sharpness and clarity, embracing the deliberate blurring of images. While initially appearing abstract, his photographs gradually reveal intricate details upon closer examination. This deliberate blurring creates a dynamic interplay between reality and abstraction, inviting viewers to engage with the images on multiple levels.
By subverting the traditional purpose of photography as a tool for faithful representation, Mimran opens up a realm of interpretation and ambiguity. Through his lens, he captures subjects in a state of flux, inviting viewers to explore the depths of the unconscious and confront the illusion of truth inherent in photography.
Denis Curti, artistic director of the Stanze della Fotografia, aptly describes Mimran’s work as a journey into the realm of the subconscious, where indefinable figures challenge viewers to discern the underlying geometry. In this enigmatic space, Mimran’s photographs take on a surreal quality, inviting viewers to embrace the ambiguity and embark on their own interpretive journey.
