From October 10, 2024, to January 20, 2025, Ca’ Rezzonico – Museo del Settecento Veneziano will host “The Paolo Galli Collection,” an exhibition curated by Alberto Craievich. This significant event celebrates the entry of the donation made by Ambassador Paolo Galli to the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, comprising 216 works by Italian masters from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.
This remarkable acquisition is one of the most important in the field of graphic arts since the Musatti bequest in 1967. With a wide variety of techniques, styles, and artists—ranging from lesser-known masters to renowned figures such as Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo—the collection offers a rare glimpse into the secretive world of artistic creation. Formed over years of passionate collecting with the guidance of art historians like Philip Pouncey and Terisio Pignatti, the collection was assembled through private auctions and dealers, driven by Galli’s personal taste.
While the collection includes many celebrated Venetian artists, it significantly enriches the museum’s holdings by introducing works from other Italian schools, such as those of Bologna, Rome, and Florence. For the first time, drawings by Agostino Carracci, Giorgio Vasari, and Cavalier d’Arpino, among others, will be part of the museum’s collection, alongside notable 20th-century artists like Cadorin, Cagli, Mafai, Severini, Sironi, and Vedova.
Visitors will be captivated by the variety of subject matter—anatomical studies, portraits, and caricatures—as well as the vibrant techniques used, including watercolors, chalk, and ink, offering a fresh and dynamic perspective on Italian graphic arts.
