From September 23 to October 1, 2023, the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice, in collaboration with the Valle d’Itria Festival, at the historic Teatro Malibran presents the opera “Orlando furioso” by Antonio Vivaldi, showcasing his incredible musical genius.
“Orlando furioso” tells a tale of knights, love, and magic, based on the epic poem by Ludovico Ariosto. The opera, in the staging of Fondazione Teatro La Fenice, brings together a stellar cast of performers. Sonia Prina takes on the role of the valiant knight Orlando, while Michela Antenucci portrays the enchanting Angelica. Lucia Cirillo embodies the sorceress Alcina, and Loriana Castellano portrays the courageous Bradamante. The cast also includes Laura Polverelli as Medoro, Kangmin Justin Kim as Ruggiero, and Luca Tittoto as Astolfo.
Under the baton of conductor Diego Fasolis, the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro La Fenice bring Vivaldi’s magnificent score to life. Fabio Ceresa directs the production, with Silvia Giordano as the assistant director. The captivating sets are designed by Massimo Checchetto, and the exquisite costumes are created by Beppe Palella. Fabio Barettin illuminates the stage with his lighting design, adding depth and atmosphere to the performance.
“Orlando furioso” RV 819 is a unique opera, surviving in manuscript form in Vivaldi’s personal library. It is a recomposition of an earlier work by Giovanni Alberto Ristori, in which Vivaldi had great success in 1713. The libretto, written by Grazio Braccioli, adds intrigue and drama to the already captivating storyline.
