From November 15 to 17, 2024, the Goldoni Theater will host a new production of William Shakespeare’s “Molto rumore per nulla” (Much Ado About Nothing), presented by La Pirandelliana and TSV – Teatro Nazionale. Adapted and directed by Veronica Cruciani, the play features performances by Lodo Guenzi and Sara Putignano in the lead roles. The production also includes scenic design by Anna Varaldo, music by John Cascone, costumes by Erika Carretta, lighting by Gianni Staropoli, and stage movements by Marta Ciappina.
Written between 1598 and 1599, “Much Ado About Nothing” is one of Shakespeare’s finest comedies, blending wit, wordplay, and insightful social commentary. The play explores themes of deception, mistaken identities, and the complexities of gender roles, as characters engage in secret plotting, overheard conversations, and linguistic games. Central to the story are Beatrice and Benedick, two sharp-tongued protagonists who initially seem more interested in trading barbs than in romance. Their witty banter and lively debates on love, marriage, and gender norms are some of the highlights of the play.
Though celebrated for its comedic brilliance, “Much Ado About Nothing” also addresses deeper issues, particularly the differing societal expectations of men and women. The contrast between the relationships of equals and opposites is at the heart of Shakespeare’s narrative, where the comedy often borders on tragedy due to the use of violent language and deceptive plotting. This production promises a fresh, insightful take on a classic, blending humor and poignant reflection.
