Matthias Schaller. Tessuto urbano
an exhibition at Palazzo Mocenigo – White Room
Matthias Schaller

The Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo – White Room – presents the “Tessuto Urbano” (Urban Fabric) exhibition by Matthias Schaller until November 26, 2023. Held in collaboration with Sonnabend Gallery in New York City, the exhibition is an opportunity for visitors to experience the incredible work of this renowned German photographer.

The exhibition consists of two independent photographic series, “Tessuto Urbano” and “Lagunenwalzer“, which together offer a unique perspective on the contemporary city. Through 53 shots on display, Schaller synthesizes his own imagery of the urban landscape, capturing the beauty and complexity of the built environment.

The “Tessuto Urbano” series depicts the seven Sestieri of Venice, showcasing the unique character of each district through Schaller’s lens. The photographs offer a fascinating insight into the intricate details of Venetian architecture and design, highlighting the interplay between light and shadow, texture, and color.

In contrast, “Lagunenwalzer” is a selection of 46 vinyl records from a Venetian punk music archive. The photographs capture the raw energy and rebellious spirit of the punk movement, offering a glimpse into an alternative aspect of the city’s cultural history.

Through “Tessuto Urbano”, Matthias Schaller invites us to look beyond the surface of the city and to explore its complex layers. The exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in photography, architecture, design, and the cultural history of Venice.
