From Wednesday, September 11, to Saturday, September 14, 2024, the Auditorium Santa Margherita “Emanuele Severino” will host the international conference “Marco Polo, the Book and Asia: Research Perspectives Twenty Years Later”. This event marks the 700th anniversary of the death of Marco Polo, the renowned Venetian explorer, and will delve into the philological and historical-cultural studies surrounding his legacy.
Organized by a distinguished Scientific Committee that includes scholars such as Alvise Andreose, Alvaro Barbieri, Eugenio Burgio, Marina Buzzoni, Chiara Concina, Giuseppe Mascherpa, Antonio Montefusco, Fabio Romanini and Samuela Simion, the conference will bring together leading experts in the field. Over four days, participants will explore new research perspectives on Marco Polo’s work and its impact on our understanding of Asia. Speakers include notable figures such as Nicola Di Cosmo, Stephen G. Haw, Angelo Cattaneo, Ma Xiaolin, and Hans Ulrich Vogel, among many others, contributing to a rich dialogue on the historical and cultural significance of Polo’s travels.
The conference will take place at the historic Auditorium Santa Margherita, a venue with deep roots in Venice’s history. Originally a 9th-century church, it has been transformed into a modern theater while preserving its artistic heritage, including the ceiling fresco depicting the martyrdom of Saint Margaret. Located in one of Venice’s most vibrant areas, the auditorium is easily accessible and offers a unique setting for this important academic gathering.
