Looking towards Germany at Bru Zane

As part of the “Cycle Cello: The Soul of Romanticism”, the chamber music concert “Looking Towards Germany” will take place at the Palazzetto Bru Zane on September 25, 2024. The evening will feature an exceptional performance by the Quatuor Dutilleux—Guillaume Chilemme and Matthieu Handtschoewercker (violins), David Gaillard (viola), and Thomas Duran (cello)—joined by celebrated cellist Victor Julien-Laferrière.

The program will delve into the rich quintet repertoire, with performances of George Onslow’s Quintet with Two Cellos No. 21 in G minor, Op. 51 and Théodore Gouvy’s Quintet with Two Cellos No. 3 in D minor.

George Onslow, one of the most prominent French composers of his time, composed thirty-four quintets, earning acclaim for his masterful harmonic structures and scholarly writing. His admiration for German music was evident, so much so that the famed music publisher Pleyel referred to him as the “French Beethoven” in 1830. Onslow’s quintets were influential, inspiring even Franz Schubert’s famous Quintet D.956. Théodore Gouvy later followed Onslow’s path, composing six string quintets between 1869 and 1880, though by that time, Germanic influence was less accepted in French musical circles.

Join us for this captivating exploration of Franco-German musical heritage, followed by a toast to celebrate the evening’s performances. This concert promises a journey through two of the finest quintets for string ensembles, highlighting the intricate beauty of the cello in the chamber music tradition.
