The Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista will stage Georges Bizet’s delightful one-act opéra-comique, Le Docteur Miracle, on March 30, 2025. As part of the Cycle Bizet, L’oiseau Rebelle, this charming work showcases the young composer’s flair for comedy, elegance, and dramatic ingenuity.
In 1856, Jacques Offenbach launched a competition to spotlight one-act opéras-comiques, attracting 78 entries. The jury awarded first prize ex aequo to two prodigious talents: Georges Bizet, just 18 years old, and Charles Lecocq. Bizet’s version premiered on April 9, 1857, at Les Bouffes-Parisiens, displaying his knack for light-hearted yet sophisticated music. Though it disappeared from the repertoire for nearly a century, it re-emerged in 1951 and has since delighted audiences worldwide.
Le Docteur Miracle brims with playful melodies and lively ensembles. Bizet’s youthful energy and wit shine through in a hilarious tale of mistaken identities, scheming lovers, and a “miracle” cure that’s anything but miraculous.
