A new staging by Fondazione Teatro La Fenice for Antonio Vivaldi‘s opera “La Griselda” at the Malibran Theater from April 29 to May 8, 2022.
The Venetian composer wrote the opera in 1735 on a libretto by Carlo Goldoni updated by Apostolo Zeno as a showcase for mezzo-soprano Anna Girò, who was very close to him in art and in life. The opera’s subject matter comes from the Medieval Italian tale of The Patient Griselda, recounted by Boccaccio and Chaucer as an example of feminine constancy through the cruelest ordeals.
Not considered as a composer to be represented in the best theaters of Venice, with the opera La Griselda Vivaldi finally enters the elegant Teatro Grimani of San Samuele. Six characters sing a variety of ‘simile arias’ whose texts refer to storms, birds, thunderbolts, etc., each with the brilliant musical illustrations well known from Vivaldi’s concerts.
In addition to the Teatro La Fenice Orchestra, the cast includes: conductor Diego Fasolis; director, scenes and costumes Gianluca Falaschi; light designers Alessandro Carletti and Fabio Barettin; dramaturgy Mattia Palma. Roles: Gualtiero, Jorge Navarro Colorado; Griselda, Ann Hallenberg; Costanza, Michela Antenucci; Roberto, Antonio Giovannini; Ottone, Kangmin Justin Kim; Corrado, Rosa Bove.
