From Jan. 18 to 22, 2023, John Neumeier’s ballet “La dame aux camélias” will be staged at La Fenice Opera House.
In his ballet -premiere in Stuttgart, Germany, on Nov. 4, 1978- John Neumeier uses the tragic 19th-century story of the courtesan Marguerite Gautier and her lover Armand Duval, as told by Alexandre Dumas‘ son, mirroring it against the fate of another unhappy couple of the previous century: the courtesan Manon Lescaut and her lover Cavalier Des Grieux. In an engaging and dense choreography of great dramaturgical finesse, Neumeier interweaves literary, historical and social themes with musical pieces by Frédéric Chopin: the 1st and 2nd Piano Concertos, the Grande Fantasie op. 13, the Grande Polonaise brillante op. 22, and many others. The Largo from the Sonata in B minor op. 58 serves as a leitmotif to the whole dramatic action.
Starring in the performance is the Hamburg Ballett with choreography by John Neumeier, while the orchestra is from Teatro La Fenice with conductor Markus Lehtinen.
