On November 19, 2023, the Malibran Theater will come alive with the captivating performance of “Io Maria, Lei Callas“, a production by Tocnadanza Venezia Company in collaboration with Camerata Musicale Barese. This exceptional event, under the artistic direction of Michela Barasciutti, pays homage to the legendary Maria Callas on the centenary of her birth (New York – December 2, 1923).
“Io Maria, Lei Callas” explores the enigmatic persona of Maria Callas, a woman who contained two distinct personalities within her—one yearning to be just Maria and another striving to meet the expectations of Callas. Excerpts from interviews with the great diva herself provide insight into this duality:
“There are two people in me: I would like to be Maria, but I have to live up to Callas’ expectations“.
“…because Callas was once Maria“.

The performance features three dancers who skillfully embody Maria, Callas, and Maria Callas, each reflecting different facets of her complex personality. Additionally, three male figures represent the loves of her life—Meneghini, Onassis, Pasolini—creating a mesmerizing interplay of mirrors and roles.
With choreography and direction by Michela Barasciutti, “Io Maria, Lei Callas” promises to be an evocative and multifaceted tribute to one of the most iconic and influential sopranos in the history of opera.
