Until June 4, 2023, the Museum of Palazzo Grimani presents the exhibition “Inge Morath. Fotografare da Venezia in poi” (Inge Morath. Photographing from Venice onward), curated by Kurt Kaindle and Brigitte Blüml.
With an exhibition itinerary that runs between the first and second floors of the Palazzo, the exhibition celebrates the centenary of the birth of Inge Morath (1923-2002), the first woman photographer to join the Magnum Photos agency, through her unpublished Venice: the protagonist is the famous reportage that the Austrian photographer made in the Lagoon in 1955, as a Magnum correspondent on behalf of L’Oeil, an art magazine that had chosen to accompany a reportage by the legendary writer Mary McCarthy with Venetian views.
The exhibition brings together more than 200 photographs with a specific and previously unseen focus on Venice. Many of these Venetian photographs, about eighty shots, have never before been exhibited in Italy. They are accompanied by a selection of her major photographic reportages on Spain, Iran, France, England-Ireland, the United States of America, China and Russia, as well as a section dedicated to portraits, a very important genre in the latter part of her career.
