The Arsenale of Venice has been a cradle of historical significance, and its Galeazze (galleys stand) as timeless witnesses to maritime heritage. Recently, these imposing vessels have become the focus of an educational endeavor within the IUAV University of Venice’s Restoration and Digital Design Laboratory.
The students engaged in an exceptional exercise involving meticulous observations, measurements, and digital renderings aimed at exploring potential scenarios for the future use of these architectural marvels. The culmination of their efforts is now on display in Tesa 105 of the Arsenale, inviting the public to witness this unique exploration.
Curated by Francesco Trovò and Ilaria Forti, this exhibition showcases the students’ diverse interpretations and visionary proposals for the galleys’ preservation and repurposing. Their insights and visions are not just theoretical but reflect practical applications that align with contemporary needs while honoring the historic essence of these structures.
Moreover, this collaboration between the IUAV University of Venice and Vela Spa, entrusted with managing the Arsenale Nord on behalf of the Municipality of Venice, marks a commendable partnership. It’s a union that leverages academic expertise and institutional stewardship to breathe new life into the cultural legacy of Venice.
Until February 15, 2024, visitors have the opportunity to witness these students’ innovative approaches, offering glimpses into potential futures for these iconic galleys and presenting a harmonious blend of heritage preservation and forward-thinking design.
