For the “Women Composers” cycle, a flute and piano concert will be held at Palazzetto Bru Zane on April 14, 2023.
French women composers have written extensively for flute. Perhaps out of empathy for a generally neglected instrument or an affinity for its timbre, similar to that of the female voice. In any case, in composing concertante or chamber music pieces for this wind instrument, they occupy a space left largely vacant by their male colleagues. With suites, sonatas, or genre pieces, Juliette Hurel and Hélène Couvert, pioneers in promoting this repertoire, leaf through the pages of famous French composers, such as Clémence de Grandval, Cécile Chaminade, Mel Bonis, Augusta Holmès, and Lili Boulanger to reveal their secrets.
Juliette Hurel is known in both the French and the international music world as a famous flautist. She was unanimously awarded the first prize for flute and the first prize for chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris and obtained prizes in several competitions such as in Darmstadt, Kobé, Bucharest and the Jean-Pierre Rampal Flute Competition.
The French pianist Hélène Couvert studied at the Paris Conservatoire. Winner of two first prizes, she follows the advice of Jacques Rouvier and Marie-Françoise Bucquet and makes her debut at the La Roque d’Anthéron Piano Festival in Lisbon. Noticed and supported by Leon Fleisher, Hélène Couvert is one of the rare pianists to be invited in residence at the prestigious Theo Lieven International Piano Foundation on Lake Como.
