From May 2 to 15, 2025, Teatro Malibran presents a new production of Der Protagonist, a one-act opera by Kurt Weill, staged by Fondazione Teatro La Fenice.

Weill’s first foray into musical theatre, Der Protagonist (1926), reflects the artistic revolution of the Weimar Republic, embracing the Neue Sachlichkeit movement, which merged political engagement with artistic innovation. Based on Georg Kaiser’s 1920 play, this literary opera explores themes of illusion, performance, and tragic reality, set against the backdrop of Shakespearean England.

A troupe of actors, preparing a pantomime for a nobleman, shifts from comedy to tragedy at the duke’s request—only for the Protagonist to lose himself in his role, committing a real-life murder. This theatre within theatre, blending farce and tragedy, draws parallels to Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos, making it a compelling and thought-provoking experience.

The Musical & Artistic Direction includes:

  • Orchestra of Teatro La Fenice
  • Conductor: Markus Stenz
  • Director: Ezio Toffolutti

The Artistic Cast includes:

  • Der Protagonist – Matthias Koziorowski
  • Schwester – Martina Welschenbach
  • Der junge Herr – Dean Murphy
  • Der Hausmeister des Herzogs – Alexander Geller
  • Der Wirt – Zachary Altman
  • Schauspieler – Szymon Chojnacki, Matteo Ferrara, Franko Klisović

A rarely performed masterpiece, this powerful and gripping production is a must-see for lovers of modern opera and theatrical experimentation!
