An icon of 20th-century Italian architecture, Carlo Scarpa transformed museum design into poetic experience. The exhibition “Il Correr di Carlo Scarpa 1953–1960” at the Correr Museum retraces his extraordinary interventions in the museum’s layout—first in the Venetian History rooms (1952–53), then in the Picture Gallery (1959–60). These projects remain milestones in post-war museography, emblematic of the refined Italian aesthetic rooted in International Rationalism. Curated by Chiara Squarcina and Andrea Bellieni, the exhibition “Il Correr di Carlo Scarpa 1953-1960” is open to the public from May 1 to October 19, 2025.
Scarpa’s work is a masterclass in contextual design. His interventions—tailored to the specific needs of each artwork and to the museum’s architectural character—elevate both display and space. From custom display cases and ingenious supports to the now-iconic easel for paintings, every element embodies Scarpa’s synthesis of form, function, and material beauty.
The exhibition showcases archival photographs from the MUVE Photographic Archive, capturing the elegance of Scarpa’s original installations. It also features original display components—crafted objects that reveal his meticulous design process and sensitivity to materials. These are not mere furnishings, but works of art in themselves, combining structural precision with artisanal mastery.
Today, as the museum undergoes careful restoration aimed at recovering Scarpa’s vision, this exhibition offers a timely homage to his enduring legacy. A journey through design as dialogue, where architecture speaks to history, and craftsmanship shapes memory.
An unmissable tribute to one of Italy’s great architectural minds, and to the Correr as a living museum.
