From August 25 to September 3, 2023, the opera “Cavalleria rusticana” takes center stage at the renowned La Fenice Opera House. The Fondazione Teatro La Fenice, in collaboration with the School of Scenography and Costume for the Show of the Academy of Fine Arts, will present a new staging of this beloved opera by Pietro Mascagni.
“Cavalleria rusticana” is considered one of the earliest and most significant examples of the Verismo movement in opera. Based on a short story by Giovanni Verga, the opera explores the timeless themes of love, jealousy, religion, and pride in a rural Sicilian setting. The plot revolves around the complex relationships between Turiddu, his mother Lucia, his two love interests Lola and Santuzza, and Lola’s husband Alfio. The melodic expression of their emotions is direct and powerful, supported by evocative orchestral interludes and accompaniment that intensify the dramatic tension.
When “Cavalleria rusticana” premiered at the Costanzi Theatre in Rome on May 17, 1890, it immediately captivated audiences with its intense naturalism. Mascagni’s masterful composition and the opera’s raw portrayal of human emotions struck a chord with the public, and it became an instant success. While Mascagni composed other operas, none achieved the same level of impact as “Cavalleria rusticana”.
The artistic and technical cast for this production includes acclaimed performers such as Jean-François Borras as Turiddu, Anna Malavasi as Lucia, Silvia Beltrami as Santuzza, Martina Belli as Lola, and Dalibor Jenis as Alfio. Also present are Valeria Arrivo and Mariateresa Bonera for the role of a woman. The production is helmed by Donato Renzetti as the conductor, Alfonso Caiani as the choirmaster, and Italo Nunziata as the director. With the addition of Danilo Rubeca as the assistant director and choreographer, and Fabio Barettin as the light designer, the stage is set for a captivating and visually stunning performance.
