“Carmen” is a four-act opera by French composer Georges Bizet, libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy. Taken from the novel of the same name by Prosper Mérimée (1845), it introduces salient changes including the introduction of the characters of Escamillo and Micaela, and the character of Don José, who in the novel is described as a rough and brutal bandit.
At the base of George Bizet’s opera, there is a story of love, passion and jealousy. Don José is a young brigadier and his mother would like him to get engaged to Micaela, a simple girl who lives in his country. Unfortunately he lets himself be seduced by the cigarette girl Carmen, who is involved in a fight with other cigar makers and, fascinated by her dancing, he lets her escape from prison and is therefore punished. Later they see each other again, she convinces him to desert and follow her, although she is also attracted by the toreador Escamillo. He follows her on the mountains, to the smugglers, but they feel they are not happy. He shows jealousy and she is impatient. Micaela arrives, asking José to return to the country from her dying mother. He leaves but only after fighting in duel with his rival Escamillo, the same one that Carmen follows in Seville. Seville will be the place where they will meet, outside the arena, and José asks Carmen to return with him, but she refuses with contempt and he stabs her to death.
