Directed by Stefano Ricci and Gianni Forte, the 52nd International Theater Festival better known as Biennale Teatro will take place from June 15 to 30, 2024, showcasing an array of performances and events featuring prominent figures in contemporary theater. In addition, the festival will present productions developed through the Biennale College Teatro, a training initiative for emerging artists.
Ricci and Forte, renowned authors and directors, honed their craft at the Silvio d’Amico National Academy of Dramatic Arts under Luca Ronconi and at New York University with Edward Albee. Their ensemble, formed in 2005, has garnered several prestigious awards, including the Hystrio, Vallecorsi, Fondi-La Pastora, Studio 12, Oddone Cappellin, and Gibellina/Salvo Randone Awards for Dramaturgy.
This year’s festival features the production “Niger & Albus”, exploring the primal dichotomy of black and white, good and evil, and the individual’s journey toward general progress through the blending of opposites. Ricci and Forte’s creations, known for their exploratory research and sharp commentary on contemporary issues, aim to awaken consciousness and envision a more desirable future. The festival will be a platform for extraordinary poetic-visionary artists to challenge and expand our understanding of the world through unforgettable performances.
The festival will also honor the Australian company “Back to Back Theatre” with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement and the Anglo-German collective “Gob Squad” with the Silver Lion. The Silver Lion award ceremony will take place on Sunday, June 16, in the Sala delle Colonne at Ca’ Giustinian, the Biennale headquarters. The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded at the festival’s closing ceremony on Sunday, June 30, also in the Sala delle Colonne.
