The 18th International Festival of Contemporary Dance (Biennale Danza 2024) is set to captivate audiences from July 18 to August 3, 2024, under the visionary direction of Wayne McGregor. The festival promises a rich program with daily performances by international soloists and companies, alongside the integral activities of Biennale College Danza, which focuses on education and training projects.
Wayne McGregor, born in Stockport, Great Britain, in 1970, is a renowned choreographer and director whose innovative works are performed by dance companies worldwide. McGregor’s creations, rooted in dance, span a diverse array of fields, including technology, visual arts, cinema, and opera. He has been honored with the title of CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire).
This year’s festival, themed “We Humans”, aims to explore the profound complexity, contradictions, and mysteries of human life. The participating artists will collaborate using both technological and analogue means, incorporating artificial intelligence as a creative and performative tool. These innovative works are expected to present unknown forms and venture into new political, social, and ethical directions.
The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to the distinguished dancer and choreographer Cristina Caprioli, while the Silver Lion goes to the acclaimed American dancer and choreographer Trajal Harrell. The awards ceremony is scheduled for July 21 in the Sala delle Colonne of Ca’ Giustinian, the home of the Biennale, during the festival.
Biennale Danza 2024 promises to be a groundbreaking event, celebrating the intersection of human experience and technological innovation through the transformative power of dance.
