A new production by the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice will be staged from March 16 to 18, 2023 at the Malibran Theater: Bach Haus.
This one-act intermezzo for three singers and small chamber ensemble evokes Bach’s family with its many musical talents, to whom Nibbio, an impresario in distress, turns to order a new opera. Musical styles and quotations (not only Bach, but also Bizet, Puccini, Bernstein…) follow one another in spirited tumult, featuring an overture, dance steps and sung numbers in accompanied recitative, arioso, and quasi-aria. A stately quotation from the opening of the Fifth Brandenburg Concerto ends the proceedings. Commissioned in 2000 by the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma to composer Michele Dall’Ongaro and librettist Vincenzo De Vivo, the work has enjoyed numerous revivals.
The evening’s program with the chamber orchestra of the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory of Venice, conductor Giovanni Battista Rigon, director Emanuele Gamba, includes:
- opening – Johann Sebastian Bach, Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht BWV 211 (Coffee Cantata)
- intermezzo – music by Michele Dall’Ongaro, libretto by Vincenzo De Vivo
