According to a millenary tradition, March 25, 421 is commonly recognized as the foundation day of the city of Venice. This is testified by the manuscript source of the Chronicon Altinate and in more recent times Marin Sanudo who, describing the great fire of Rialto in 1514 in his Diarii, wrote: “…solum restò in piedi la chiexia di San Giacomo di Rialto… la qual fu la prima chiexia edificata in Venetia dil 421 a dì 25 Marzo, come in le nostre croniche si leze…” only the church of San Giacomo di Rialto remained standing… which was the first church built in Venice in 421 on March 25, as in our chronicles we read…”.
This year marks the 1600th anniversary and the City of Venice celebrates it with an exciting program of events and manifestations organized and promoted by local organizations and institutions, which include exhibitions, museum and city tours, conferences and seminars.
The Municipal Administration of Venice promotes and coordinates the initiatives related to the event, and has established a Steering Committee, composed of leading personalities and representatives from public, academic, cultural, economic and social institutions in order to involve in the project all subjects present in the metropolitan area.
