On February 1, 2025, the Malibran Theater will present Acquaprofonda, a captivating contemporary opera for children, with music by Giovanni Sollima and a libretto by Giancarlo De Cataldo. This inspiring production, commissioned by the Teatro Sociale di Como and co-produced with the Opera di Roma, first premiered in 2021 and has since resonated with audiences for its poignant exploration of a pressing global issue: water pollution.
The Story: Set against the backdrop of a humble beach, a factory, and a small hut, the story follows Serena, her father (the factory caretaker), and the factory owner, Padron Bu. Their lives are transformed by the arrival of a massive, sick whale plagued by the effects of pollution. Guided by the wisdom of the Old Mariner, Serena takes a stand, encouraging her father to act responsibly and helping the whale rid itself of the plastic filling its belly. In a bold move, she returns the polluting waste to its source – Padron Bu’s factory – delivering a powerful message about the consequences of human actions.
