From May 9 to 11, 2025, the Goldoni Theatre presents Ancora Tempesta (Storm Still) by Peter Handke, a Nobel Prize-winning playwright whose work continues to provoke and inspire. Directed by Fabrizio Arcuri, with dramaturgy by Fabrizio Sinisi, this production is part of a special project honoring Handke’s literary legacy.
The title, echoing Shakespeare’s King Lear (“The storm is still raging”), sets the tone for this epic and introspective drama. Handke, now in his later years, stages an extraordinary dialogue with his ancestors—Slovenian Carinthians—imagining them as younger than himself. Through five compelling conversations, he resurrects his grandparents, his young mother, and uncles who followed divergent paths during the Second World War: some falling on the frontlines, others joining the partisan resistance against Nazi oppression.
This evocative gathering illuminates the forgotten history of a marginalized minority and the singular partisan uprising within the borders of the Third Reich. Yet, the play is more than a historical reflection. It delves deeply into Handke’s identity conflict—being both Slovenian and German—and the broader fractures of European identity.
Ancora Tempesta unfolds with prophetic monologues and stirring dialogue, offering audiences a raw meditation on nationhood, memory, and belonging. The storm of history, Handke suggests, still rages within us, shaping and haunting our collective consciousness. Join the Goldoni Theatre for this profound and moving theatrical experience.
