From October 31 to November 10, 2024, the opera “La vita è sogno” (Life is a Dream) by Gian Francesco Malipiero will return to the stage at Teatro Malibran, marking the 80th anniversary of its Venetian premiere in 1944. This new production is part of Teatro La Fenice’s initiative to revive this fascinating and lesser-known work, based on the classic play by Calderón de la Barca.
Composed during a pivotal phase of Malipiero’s career, the opera is notable for its lyrical qualities, standing apart from his other works that frequently draw from Commedia dell’Arte and reject 19th-century operatic conventions. Instead, “La vita è sogno” offers a reflective “lyrical parenthesis”, as Malipiero himself described it, integrating more traditional elements of lyrical opera while maintaining the composer’s characteristic musical language of juxtaposed panels.
The opera features a stellar cast, with Riccardo Zanellato as the King, Leonardo Cortellazzi as the Prince, and Francesca Gerbasi as Estrelle. The production will also showcase Veronica Simeoni, Levent Bakirci, Simone Alberghini, Enrico Di Geronimo, and more. The Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro La Fenice will be conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta, with the chorus led by Alfonso Caiani. Direction is by Valentino Villa, with sets designed by Massimo Checchetto, costumes by Elena Cicorella, and lighting by Fabio Barettin.
This revival of “La vita è sogno” promises to be a spectacular tribute to Malipiero’s unique operatic vision, blending dramatic intensity with lyrical beauty. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to experience a rediscovered gem of 20th-century Italian opera.
