Learning together at Bru Zane

Cycle Cello, The Soul of Romanticism
at Palazzetto Bru Zane
Learning together at Bru Zane

As part of the “Cycle Cello: The Soul of Romanticism”, the chamber music concert “Learning Together” will take place at the Palazzetto Bru Zane on Tuesday, October 8, 2024. This unique event will feature the talents of cellists Edgar Moreau, Gabriel Guignier, and Jean-Baptiste de Maria, performing a rare repertoire for multiple cellos.

The program for the evening includes:

  • Fernand de La Tombelle: Suite pour trois cellos
  • Max D’Ollone: Andante et Scherzo pour trois cellos
  • Félix Battanchon: Trio pour trois cellos n°2, op. 40
  • Auguste Franchomme: Nocturnes pour deux cellos n°1, op. 15
  • Jacques Offenbach: Cours méthodiques de duos pour deux cellos, op. 54 (excerpts)

In the Romantic period, works for multiple cellos were rarely featured in concert settings. Instead, they were primarily intended for pedagogical purposes, helping students develop ensemble playing skills. Jacques Offenbach, a virtuoso cellist, composed his Cours méthodiques de duos pour deux violoncelles (1839-1855) with this in mind. These duets, ranging from simple to challenging, were designed to facilitate interaction between two instrumentalists at the same level.

Other composers, such as Auguste Franchomme, a professor at the Paris Conservatory, and Félix Battanchon, who taught at the Geneva Conservatory, also contributed to this tradition by writing ensemble pieces for their students. “Learning Together” invites listeners into this world, offering a rare glimpse into a repertoire that highlights both the technical mastery and the harmonious collaboration required of cellists. Don’t miss this exceptional evening of music!
