As part of the “Cycle Cello: The Soul of Romanticism”, the chamber music concert “Belle Époque Cello” will take place at the Palazzetto Bru Zane on Thursday, October 3, 2024. The evening will feature the extraordinary talents of cellist Yan Levionnois and pianist Guillaume Bellom.
The program will showcase three masterful works from the late 19th and early 20th centuries:
- Léon Boëllmann: Sonate pour violoncelle et piano, Op. 40
- Louis Vierne: Soirs étrangers pour violoncelle et piano, Op. 56
- Albéric Magnard: Sonate pour violoncelle et piano, Op. 20
The 19th century marked a significant evolution in cello composition. No longer relegated to a harmonic bass role, the cello emerged as a solo instrument, revealing its expressive potential. In France, this development was even more pronounced, with the cello sonata taking precedence over its violin counterpart. Many of these works were crafted by composers who were cellists themselves or closely connected to renowned soloists.
By the turn of the century, the cello sonata had found its place in the repertoire, with composers like Boëllmann and Magnard following the example set by César Franck. Meanwhile, Vierne’s Soirs étrangers embraced a freer form, reflecting a more personal and imaginative approach to the cello’s lyrical possibilities.
This concert will be a rich exploration of the cello’s transformation during the Belle Époque, revealing its depth and romantic resonance. Don’t miss this enchanting musical evening!
