Cellos together at Bru Zane

Cycle Cello, The Soul of Romanticism
at Palazzetto Bru Zane
Cellos together at Bru Zane

As part of the “Cycle Cello: The Soul of Romanticism”, the concert “Cellos Together” will take place at the Palazzetto Bru Zane on September 22, 2024, showcasing a captivating performance by four esteemed cellists: Anne Gastinel, Xavier Phillips, Lila Beauchard, and Leonardo Capezzali.

The evening’s program offers a rich and diverse selection of works, beginning with Marie-Joseph Erb’s Trois Pièces pour quatre cellos, op. 63, followed by Jacques Offenbach’s Cours méthodiques de duos pour deux cellos, op. 51 (extracts). Audiences will also enjoy Auguste Franchomme’s Trois Préludes de Frédéric Chopin transcribed for four cellos, alongside Hélène-Frédérique de Faye-Jozin’s Suite sylvestre (extracts) and Florent Schmitt’s Andante religiosa. The concert will conclude with Jacques Offenbach’s Quatuor pour quatre cellos.

Originally conceived as educational exercises for cello students – exemplified by composers like Offenbach and Franchomme – these pieces evolved into rich, standalone works by the early 20th century. Composers began exploring the unique and resonant sounds that multiple cellos could create together. This concert offers a rare opportunity to experience a little-known repertoire, including hidden gems by Erb and de Faye-Jozin. The performance promises a journey through the expressive, romantic, and often unexplored landscapes of cello ensembles, showcasing the instrument’s versatility and emotional depth. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to discover the powerful beauty of the cello in ensemble form.
