The 68th International Festival of Contemporary Music (Biennale Musica 2024) will be held from September 26 to October 11, 2024, under the direction of Lucia Ronchetti. This year’s festival promises an enriching program, featuring numerous daily events with internationally renowned soloists and ensembles. A key highlight of the festival is the Biennale College Musica, an innovative platform dedicated to fostering new musical projects. Selected through an open call, these projects are seamlessly integrated into the festival, reflecting the cutting-edge creativity of composers and performers from around the globe.
Biennale Musica 2024 will explore the concept of absolute music, commissioning works from some of the most original composers on the international scene. Over sixteen days of concerts and theoretical events, the festival will delve into the autonomy of music as a language and the ontological essence of sound, offering audiences a deep dive into the state of the art in contemporary music. Theoretical aspects of musical language, the relationship between musical time and listening, and the cognitive questions surrounding new music production and reception will be explored through conferences, meetings, and round tables.
The festival will honor two distinguished figures in the music world: English composer Rebecca Saunders, known for her evocative soundscapes, will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement. The Silver Lion will be awarded to Ensemble Modern, a legendary German group celebrated for their exploration of European and American avant-garde music over the past forty years. This edition of Biennale Musica promises to be a profound celebration of musical innovation and excellence.
