The “Regata Storica” (Historical Regatta), an annual highlight in Venice, will take place on Sunday, 1 September 2024, along the iconic Grand Canal. This event, a vibrant blend of history and sport, is one of the most spectacular and beloved traditions in the city. It draws numerous tourists, but it is especially cherished by Venetians who hold it dear among Venice’s array of annual festivities.
The Regatta unfolds in two distinct phases: the historical procession and the competitive regattas.
The historical procession sets the stage, reenacting the grand welcome given to Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, upon her arrival in Venice in 1489 after abdicating her throne. This procession features dozens of traditional Venetian rowing boats, including the unique bissone, used solely for such occasions. Rowers and participants don period costumes, creating a vivid historical tableau as they journey from the San Marco Basin along the Grand Canal to the Constitution Bridge, then back to the Machina, a floating stage near Ca’ Foscari. This spectacle is met with enthusiastic applause from spectators lining the banks and watching from nearby homes.
Following the procession, the event’s competitive spirit comes alive with the regattas. These races are the pinnacle of the Venetian rowing season, and the winners, celebrated by the city’s top officials, earn the status of champions, highly esteemed in the rowing community.
Among the races, the women’s regatta on two-oared mascaretes and the champions’ regatta on two-oared gondolini stand out, showcasing the skill and tradition of Venetian rowing. The Historical Regatta not only celebrates Venice’s rich heritage but also underscores the city’s ongoing passion for rowing, making it a must-see event for locals and visitors alike.
