The 81st Venice Film Festival, organized by the Venice Biennale and directed by Alberto Barbera, is set to take place at the Lido of Venice from 28 August to 7 September 2024. Officially recognized by the FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations), the festival continues its tradition of promoting international cinema in all its artistic, entertaining, and industrial forms, fostering a spirit of freedom and dialogue.
A unique section of the festival is dedicated to the restoration and valorization of classic films, contributing to a deeper understanding of cinema’s rich history.
The international jury for the Venezia 81 Competition, chaired by renowned French actress Isabelle Huppert, includes a distinguished panel of filmmakers and actors: American director and screenwriter James Gray, British director and screenwriter Andrew Haigh, Polish director, screenwriter and producer Agnieszka Holland, Brazilian director and screenwriter Kleber Mendonça Filho, Mauritanian director, screenwriter and producer Abderrahmane Sissako, Italian director and screenwriter Giuseppe Tornatore, German director and screenwriter Julia von Heinz, and Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi. This diverse and esteemed jury underscores the festival’s commitment to a wide range of cinematic voices and perspectives.
Highlighting this year’s festival, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to American actress Sigourney Weaver. Known for her versatile performances and significant contributions to cinema, Weaver’s recognition adds a prestigious honor to the festival.
