The Accademia Galleries and Museum Berggruen come together to present the groundbreaking exhibition “Elective Affinities: Picasso, Matisse, Klee, and Giacometti”. Until June 23, 2024, this exceptional collaboration will showcase works from the Museum Berggruen – Neue Nationalgalerie in dialogue with masterpieces from the Gallerie dell’Accademia and the Casa dei Tre Oci.
Curated by Giulio Manieri Elia, Michele Tavola, Gabriel Montua, and Veronika Rudorfer, the exhibition brings together over 40 extraordinary works by Picasso, Matisse, Klee, Giacometti, and Cézanne from the Berggruen Museum in Berlin. These works will engage in a dialogue with the timeless masterpieces of the Gallerie dell’Accademia.
The title “Elective Affinities” draws inspiration from Goethe’s novel, emphasizing the potential that arises from the encounter between these two significant collections. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the synergies and contrasts between Venetian classics and modernist works, creating stimulating spaces for dialogue and interpretation.
At the Accademia Galleries, 16 works from the Berggruen Museum will be seamlessly integrated into the permanent exhibition, inviting visitors on a treasure hunt to discover the connections between different artistic periods. Notable pairings include Picasso’s Portrait of Dora Maar alongside Giorgione’s La Vecchia, and studies for Les Demoiselles d’Avignon juxtaposed with sketches by Tiepolo.
The exhibition journey continues at the Casa dei Tre Oci on the island of Giudecca, where visitors can admire works on paper by Klee, Picasso, Cézanne, and Matisse. This historic neo-Gothic palace, now restored and open to the public for the first time, will serve as a dynamic venue for international discussion and cultural exchange, hosting exhibitions, workshops, and symposiums.
