The Vogalonga, a “non-competitive” rowing regatta held annually in Venice during May, offers a picturesque and symbolic journey through the city’s waterways. The roughly 30-kilometer course winds its way through Venice, weaving past iconic landmarks like the San Marco Basin and the Grand Canal while encompassing neighboring areas such as Burano and Murano. The route culminates as boats return to Venice via the Cannaregio Canal, concluding in front of Punta della Salute.
This remarkable event commenced on May 8, 1975, coinciding with the ”Sensa”. Boats congregated in front of the Palazzo Ducale, heralded by a cannon shot to mark the start of the inaugural Vogalonga. Over the years, the event has witnessed an exponential rise in global participation, welcoming rowers from diverse corners of the world, each navigating various boat types propelled by oars. To ensure a smooth event, the Organizing Committee stipulates a cap of around 8,000 participants or 2,000 boats, reserving the right to close registrations upon reaching this limit.
Every participant who successfully completes the course, except for disqualified crews, receives a commemorative medal and a participation certificate. Moreover, there’s the anticipation of additional prizes, occasionally distributed through draws, contributed by various associations and institutions, adding an extra layer of excitement and camaraderie to this remarkable aquatic spectacle in the heart of Venice.
