Marking the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s passing on January 8, 2024, the Museum of Oriental Art is currently hosting a compelling exhibition titled “Miao – Costumes and Jewelry from Southern China“. This insightful showcase, supported by the Veneto Regional Museums Directorate and patronized by the Confucius Institute of Venice and the Italian Geographical Society, aims to shed light on the Miao population of China.

The Miao people are celebrated for their exceptional artisanal skills, notably in crafting fabrics and intricate embroidery. Through their elaborate decorative motifs and the meticulous processes of collecting raw materials, weaving, pleating, and garment assembly, the exhibition unravels an alternative way of life deeply intertwined with animistic beliefs. This unique lifestyle has endured, showcasing a resilient cultural heritage, albeit now confronted by the encroaching pressures of modern tourism.

The exhibition owes its rich array of artifacts to the generous contributions of Franco Passarello, a dedicated collector of global garments, and the Italian Geographical Society. The latter provided invaluable illustrated albums commissioned by the emperors of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) to explore and document distant territories beyond the empire’s borders. These remarkable pieces on display offer audiences a glimpse into the intricacies of a multifaceted culture, one that has proudly safeguarded its identity over the centuries.

The exhibition, with its stunning showcase of Miao costumes and jewelry, invites visitors to delve into the distinctive world of this ancient culture, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Miao people’s rich traditions and heritage. It stands as a tribute to their enduring legacy in the face of evolving global landscapes.
