The Procuratie Vecchie in St. Mark’s Square have become a radiant spectacle adorned with the brilliance of twelve “Murano Illuminates the World” chandeliers, ushering in the Christmas season. This innovative exhibition, an amalgamation of Murano glass and international contemporary art, stands as a testament to the city’s rich traditions while embracing the future. Crafted by celebrated artists and produced by nine prestigious Murano furnaces, these chandeliers illuminate the square in an awe-inspiring display.
Under the auspices of The Venice Glass Week and the City of Venice, this project marks a historical moment, bringing together the expertise and craftsmanship of Murano with the vision of renowned artists. The fusion of arts, knowledge, and experimentation has birthed twelve masterpieces that grace St. Mark’s Square until February 2024, imparting a touch of magnificence to the heart of Venice.
Organized by the Cultural Productions Service of the City of Venice, Vela Spa, and the St. Mark’s Square Association, this extraordinary initiative represents a collaborative effort. Until February 29, 2024, these enchanting chandeliers will illuminate the nights, transforming the square into an open-air gallery, accessible to all.
Renowned artists such as Philip Baldwin, Monica Guggisberg, Michael Craig-Martin, and others, in collaboration with prestigious Murano furnaces, have contributed to this grand endeavor. Their shared objective is to spotlight Murano as not just a cradle of traditional craftsmanship but also as a hub of innovation and experimentation.
