Feast of Madonna della Salute 2023

Madonna della Salute
A Venice Tradition of Faith and Celebration
Festa della Salute

On November 21st each year, the city of Venice is swept up in a unique blend of faith, history, and celebration as it commemorates the Feast of Madonna della Salute. This vibrant event carries with it a rich and poignant history, intertwining themes of tragedy, resilience, and devotion.

The roots of this celebration can be traced back to the devastating plague of 1630-1631, a period of great suffering and loss for the Venetian people. In response to this deadly scourge, the Doge made a solemn vow to seek the intercession of the Virgin Mary to bring an end to the plague. This vow ultimately led to the construction of the magnificent Church of Santa Maria della Salute, or Saint Mary of Health, a testament to the city’s commitment to overcoming adversity.

Today, the people of Venice continue to honor this tradition with a pilgrimage to the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. They cross a votive bridge of boats, a temporary structure assembled for this occasion, that spans the Grand Canal. Thousands participate in this symbolic journey, lighting candles to beseech the Madonna for good health and well-being.

During the plague, Venice endured a prolonged period of isolation, and it was the Dalmatians who provided essential support, mainly in the form of mutton. This unique historical connection is celebrated through the traditional Venetian dish, “Castradina”, a flavorful mutton stew. It’s a dish that reflects the tenacity and resilience of the Venetian people during trying times.

The Feast of Madonna della Salute beautifully combines religious devotion with a joyous and communal spirit. As the faithful light candles and offer their prayers inside the basilica, the surroundings outside transform into a carnival-like atmosphere. Stalls brim with candies, colorful balloons, and toys, creating a lively juxtaposition of sacred and secular.

The temporary bridge of boats connecting different districts of Venice is a symbol of unity and continuity. Tens of thousands of pilgrims make their way to the basilica, reaffirming their faith and paying homage to Our Lady. The Feast of Madonna della Salute stands as a poignant reminder of Venice’s resilience and enduring spirit, where faith and celebration come together in a harmonious blend.
