The timeless masterpiece “La traviata” graces the stage of La Fenice Opera House from September 10 to October 13, 2023. Presented by the Fondazione Teatro La Fenice, this production of Giuseppe Verdi’s beloved opera promises a contemporary twist on a classic tale.
Verdi originally intended “La traviata” to be a critique of contemporary society, but due to censorship, the setting was shifted back to the 1700s. However, in this production directed by Robert Carsen, Verdi’s vision is brought to life in a modern setting, allowing the opera’s message to resonate with today’s audience. Carsen’s interpretation has achieved great success, including the reopening of La Fenice in 2004 after a devastating fire and now returning for its fourth cycle in just a decade.
The opera tells the story of Violetta Valéry, portrayed by Rosa Feola or Claudia Pavone, and her tumultuous love affair with Alfredo Germont, played by Piero Pretti or Giulio Pelligra. Gabriele Viviani or Luca Grassi takes on the role of Giorgio Germont, Alfredo’s father. The cast also includes Valeria Girardello as Flora, Cristiano Olivieri as Gastone, and a talented ensemble of performers in supporting roles.
Stefano Ranzani conducts the orchestra of Teatro La Fenice. The creative team behind the production includes Robert Carsen as the director, Christophe Gayral as the stage director, and Patrick Kinmonth as the set and costume designer. Philippe Giraudeau choreographs the performance, and the lighting design is a collaboration between Robert Carsen and Peter Van Praet.
Be prepared to be swept away by the powerful music, emotionally charged performances, and visually stunning production of “La traviata” at La Fenice Opera House. Experience Verdi’s timeless masterpiece in a new light and witness the enduring relevance of this captivating opera.
