Festa della Sensa, or the Feast of the Ascension, is a traditional event held in Venice, Italy, on the Sunday following the Ascension Day. The festival commemorates the historic marriage of Venice to the sea and has been celebrated for over a thousand years.
The Festa della Sensa starts with a procession of decorated boats that leave from St. Mark’s Square and make their way to the Lido Island, where a ceremony takes place. During the ceremony, the Mayor of Venice and other officials toss a golden ring into the water as a symbol of the marriage between Venice and the sea, reaffirming the city’s close relationship with the sea. This tradition dates back to the 9th century when the Doge of Venice would perform the same ceremony to ensure the city’s prosperity and security at sea.
In addition to the boat procession and the ring-tossing ceremony, the Festa della Sensa also includes various events and performances, such as regattas, live music, food and wine tastings, and traditional games. Visitors can also witness the historic galleys of Venice in action, with rowers wearing period costumes and reenacting the battles that took place in the lagoon during the city’s heyday.
The Festa della Sensa is not just a celebration of Venice’s maritime heritage but also a way to bring the community together and preserve its cultural traditions. The event attracts locals and visitors alike and is a great way to experience the unique and vibrant culture of Venice.
