The “Mostra internazionale di arte cinematografica” is the festival held annually on the Venice Lido. It is held inside the Palazzo del Cinema located at the Marconi waterfront, which has been joined by other buildings nearby (Palazzo del Casinò, PalaBiennale, Sala Darsena and Sala Giardino). The first edition dates back to 1932, from an idea of Count Giuseppe Volpi, former president of the Venice Biennale. Currently, the most important awards given are the Golden Lion (best film), Silver Lion (best director), Special Jury Prize, Coppa Volpi (best actress and actor), Osella Award (best screenplay) and Mastroianni Award (emerging actress or actor). In addition to the main awards, there are also other special awards.
Directed by Alberto Barbera and organized by the Venice Biennale, the 79th edition of the Venice Film Festival runs from August 31 to September 10, 2022. The aim of the Venice Film Festival is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue. The festival also organizes retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.
