Sixty years after Ukrainian-born American sculptor Louise Nevelson‘s participation in the Venice Biennale, her works return to Venice in a major exhibition scheduled on the second floor of the Procuratie Vecchie from April 23 to September 11, 2022.
Curated by Julia Bryan-Wilson, the exhibition “Louise Nevelson. Persistence” coincides with the opening of part of the building overlooking St. Mark’s Square – one of the most iconic and recognizable in the city, which can be visited for the first time in 500 years – after the impressive restoration by David Chipperfield Architects Milan, also advisor to the exhibition.
“Louise Nevelson. Persistence” will be the most extensive and in-depth exhibition of the revolutionary American artist to be held in Italy since 2013, organized by the Louise Nevelson Foundation and included as an official Collateral Event of the 59. International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.
Articulated in nine rooms on the second floor of the Procuratie Vecchie, the path will offer iconic pieces of Nevelson’s production, such as large-scale sculptures in painted wood, but also examples of her white sculptures, including the multiple column installation “Dawn’s Presence – Three” (1975) and her rare gold-colored works, such as “The Golden Pearl” (1962). Sculptural collages and assemblages will be presented in dialogue with the large-scale works, delving into the salient features of Louise Nevelson’s artistic and research process alongside her interest in unconventional materials, such as raw wood, metal, cardboard, sandpaper, and aluminum foil.
