The only opera composed by Beethoven, Fidelio is based on a libretto by Joseph Sonnleithner and Georg Friedrich Treitschke from Jean-Nicolas Bouilly’s Léonore, a text from 1798. The performance was complex and three versions are known: the first version of Fidelio was composed in 1805 in three acts and staged at the Theater an der Wien. The second version was also staged in Vienna in 1806, while the third and final version in two acts dates back to 1814 and debuted at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna.
